Classroom Behavior And How It Can Be Managed
Poor study skills and inappropriate classroom behavior are some of the things you have to deal with when you are a teacher. Going through behavior problems is something that most students go through since its part of growing up. For some it is more severe than others. This behavior is what distinguishes the individual kids from the regular ones. Let’s look at several ways you can manage classroom behavior.
Tell the students what your behavior expectations are about. At the start of every school year tell the students what you expect. As from the first day of school come up with rules that will guide the class. Go through the rules together with the students and make it a tradition in the classroom. The rules should be accompanied by signs that will be used to warn someone who is making a mistake. Be keen to see how well they are following the rules.,
Keep on checking if anyone has had any adverse reaction and offered them feedback. If a student has forms of disruptive behavior curb it at early stage and always stay close to them and understand them well. Use severe voice and gestures to remind a student who is involved in bad behavior. When the practice is right it will be nice if you reward them.
Enforce the rules using methods like social, activity, tangible, edible and detrimental reinforcement. Tokens can be used to reward good behavior instead of using tangible rewards. For a later day the tokens can be used as backup reinforcement. A contingency contact can be used in the case of older children. The contact should be drafted by you and the student saying that when they behave appropriately they will be rewarded. Shaping is a word used to explain a method used to teaching good behavior in tiny bits. Existing, as well as new behaviors, can be taught using shaping.
Explain your behavior expectations using a model. In order for the rest of the students to understand when one of them has good behavior use them as an example. In the presence of the other classmates teach a student who has behaved wrongly so that the rest can learn. When you do this you teach the one who was wrong as well as the rest of the students. The student should be part of the behavior management program by being part of coming up with the goals, making sure they don’t make a mistake on their own and even by evaluating how they have done and how they should be rewarded. The behavior management program should also include the parents.
